I see spots in my vision! Why?

Jan 25 - 15  |  Many of us see occasional spots in front of our eyes that seem to dance and move away as we look toward them.  There are many causes of these spots and if you are experiencing them, you should have an Optometrist rule out the some of the serious eye problems that they can herald.  This post is more about why we actually see the spots.   Seeing something dancing in your visual field means that something is in the optic path of your eye.  If you do not wear glasses or contact lenses, the optic path of light starts with your cornea > then through a fluid called aqueous > then through the in-eye lens > then through a fluid/gel called vitreous > ending at your retina.  Anything or any defect in this path will generally cause spots.  This could be something physically in the way (like blood cells) or just optical imperfections in the system (like cracks in the vitreous gel).  How pronounced your spots are depends on location and also where in the optic path the defects arise...  Think of making a shadow with your hand on the snow... the closer your hand is to the snow... the sharper the shadow.  The further your hand is away from the snow the less defined the shadow appears.  The closer an optical imperfection is the retina... generally the more defined it will be.  Most spots are not serious but have all spots assessed by an Optometrist.  In the London area we can help.   dr.j  www.studioeyecare.com
