Jan 5 - 15 | To those of us in our 40's, the challenge to focus on fine print, cell phones and other close details is often the first problem that we have had with our vision. What happens and why is this so predictable? Eyes work much like cameras and to make things clear far away and up close require different lens powers (i.e. a camera's auto-focus system changes the lens power). Eyes also change power but do this utilizing a natural auto-focus system of a flexible lens and muscle. In a child's eye, the lens is very flexible and and the range of focus is large. In our 40's the natural lens becomes predictably stiffer and the system does not work as well. In our 50's, the lens becomes hard and the system invariable fails. There is nothing you can do to change this could via diet or eye exercise. So why do some seniors not need glasses to read? Subscribe and find out in my next post. dr.j
