Jan 14 - 15 | With the incredibly bright day today here in London Ontario, I had a question on snow blindness. Snow blindness (photokeratitis) is essentially a sunburn to the clear, front surface of the eyes. Like a bad sunburn, it is painful condition caused from overexposure to ultra-violet (UV) light. The best medicine for snowblindness is prevention with sunglassess or goggles. Remember - with the reflectivity of the snow, there is still enough UV light in the winter - especially at higher altitudes - to cause it! Snowblindness typically resolves in 24-72 miserable hours but an Optometrist can help with eyedrops to reduce pain and ensure no infection occurs during healing. dr.j www.studioeyecare.com
