UV light through eyelids?

April 22 - 15  |  Had a great question yesterday from a patient...  "I do not want racoon eyes, do I need to wear those shields in a tanning bed?... I keep my eyes closed!"  Everyone knows that UV light from tanning beds and sunbathing can damage the inside of the eye and yes, keeping your eyes closed does greatly limit the amount of UV radiation entering the eye... however your eyelids are a very common location for skin cancer.  Probably due in combination to the lids' skin type and also that we don't generally put sunscreen very close to our eyes for fear of stinging/irritation.  So think of the tanning bed shields and sunglasses as protecting your lids as much as your eyes and yes - wear them!    dr.j    Studioeyecare.com
