Jan 29 - 15 | Eyelashes have a "life" of approximately 4-5 months before they naturally fall out. But what reasons cause lashes to fall out more rapidly? Is it worth seeing an Optometrist about lash loss? The most common reason seen in my practice for early/rapid lash loss is inflammation of the lids/lash follicles secondary to infection (bacteria) or infestation (mites) Yikes! In these cases, the lash loss is usually accompanied by: lash "dandruff", redness at your eye lid margins, red eyes and perhaps the sensation that there is always 'something in your eye'. Once the cause of the inflammation is removed - your lashes will regrow. This is a very treatable condition with topical medications, cleaning pads and sometimes oral meds. There are other reasons for lash loss that are can be more serious so if you are experiencing madarosis - i.e. lash loss - please let us know! We'll talk more about lashes next time. dr.j
